Other folks might throw a party, but at the 2010 Virginia Chili, Blues N’ Brews Cook-Off…we ARE the party! The Virginia CBNB Cook-Off is being held Saturday, September 25th from 3pm-8pm in Downtown Waynesboro, VA, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
Nestled at the gateway to both the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, and along the South River, the 2010 Cook-Off marks the 4th year of this sanctioned Regional ICS competition featuring over $3,200 in prize money, mega and micro-brews galore, a last chance competition before the World Championship, and amazing live blues music featuring our headliner, Grammy Nominated Blues Artist Tom Principato. This year’s event is going to be “Spicy.”

This cookoff was formerly known as *Wannatouchama. It is being held at its new location less than 2 miles from the old one. The new location is Lenny Brewster Sports Center 21024 Otoe Rd., Apple Valley, California. This new location will make it truly a Happy Trails Chili Cookoff as there is plenty of room for parking and dry camping for RVs (with reservation). With a lot more room for the main attraction THE CHILI COOKS.
WE LOVE OUR COOKS! And to show this there will be a Friday night FREE welcome dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. ( RSVP by Oct. 15) and a FREE Saturday morning breakfast from 7 to 8:30 am. For all of the cooks and judges.

I have been privileged to be asked to be the chief judge for this upcoming event. Have visited the site and can tell you it is nestled in a rural setting of Hesperia. Not only a private cattle ranch but a beautiful, tranquil park like setting with a wonderful lake, grass and plenty of room for a cook-off. The cooks will be set up on the grass area facing and surrounding the lake. Plenty of room to come out the Friday before and camp out or bring your RV (no hook ups).
I have been informed that you will have the opportunity to be a part of a life changing event. This will be helping to raise funds for a local resident who has been battling Lyme disease and needs our help.
I am PLEADING to all the cooks to PLEASE sign up EARLY as Chairperson Shelley Hasty needs to be assured ICS people are behind her efforts. Since this a very important fund raising event, please plan to participate in PEOPLES CHOICE chili.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGIONAL & COLORADO STATE - AUGUST 21-22, 2010
Two great cookoffs were held again at the base of the Winter Park Ski Resort (9100 ft.) in Winter Park, Colorado. The weather was perfect both days, and all of the cooks enjoyed the beautiful mountains that surrounded them. We had several new cooks and cooking teams this year, that enjoyed themselves so much, that they said they’d start coming out to more cookoffs. Cooks were mostly from Colorado, but we had Florida and Texas represented as well. Over $2200 was raised selling 2 for $1 tasting cups, for the country’s premier National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD), based there at the Winter Park Resort.
The new Cookoff Chairman, Aaron Davidson, along with his assistant, Brian Bishop, did a bang up job of putting the cookoffs together, and kept the judging area stocked with plenty of great judges, condiments for judging and lots of drinks. The scorekeeping crew this year, which consisted of Kathy Plager, Chief Scorekeeper, Kay and Mike Rook, Aaron Davidson, and Kristi Audette and Heather Cracraft from the Town of Superior Cookoff (Saturday only), kept the judging area running very smoothly both days.
The Fraser Valley Guacamole Off had 6 entries this year, and it was amazing how different they all looked and tasted.
Fun times were had by all the cooks, judges, and lots of public, who gobbled up plenty of People’s Choice chili that the cooks provided.

Maureen Barrett (Chairwoman) and her friend Lori worked very hard and produced an excellent ICS Regional Chili Cookoff and this their first time. Congratulations to them and Adeana plus all the other volunteers………What a bang up job!
The setting for the cookoff and festival was held at the “Town Center” located at Archer and Willow Springs Rd. This is a beautiful new complex as well as the Village Center.
Everything worked well and as planned except for the “heat”. How hot was it you asked. It was terribly hot !! The good thing was that we did not get rained on as had been predicted.
All in all the contestants and the public came out and supported this event and everyone had a great time. Look for this Cookoff to be even bigger and better next year.
The festival sold tasting kits to the public for sampling, plus many other events and contest to help raise funds for the Village Recreational Parks and Programs. It is too soon to know the outcome, but it is estimated that the Cookoff and Festival raised a few thousands of dollars for these program.

As a side note, Larry and Wes donated their share of winnings back to the Village Parks and Recreation Programs - very, very nice gesture!
As you can see we had some very good contestants and other than the temperature and humidity, we all had a great time.

THISTLEDOWN REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF - AUGUST 21, 2010
This was the 10th anniversary of this ICS cookoff hosted by Thistledown and what a bang up job they do. Brent Reitz (General Mgr.) and Heather McColloch (Marketing Dir.) plus all the other Thistledown folks really go all out to welcome the chili cooks as well as the public.
The cooks are always treated with several nice gifts and goodie bags and some of the best hospitality that any of the cookoffs that we attend. There support of the ICS and the chili cooks have been unwavering.
The contestants pull vehicle up under the covered paddock to their already set up table and chairs. They can cook chili and watch the racing and bet on the ponies with the pay windows directly behind them. This is a very easy and exciting cookoff to attend.
Brent makes sure everyone is well cared for and he has been doing this for 10 years.
Hats off to all of Thistledown!
Ken Kostal (Chairman) and his wife Diane (Chief Scorekeeper) as usual run a very smooth cookoff and judging area. As many of you know Ken and Diane run 4 or 5 cookoffs each year in the Ohio area and all the cooks enjoy what they do for the ICS and Chili.
Brent and Heather’s charity of choice is the Retired Race Horse Cancer Fund. Yes, horses do get cancer also. They care for these animals during their last part of their lives to prevent them from going to the “slaughter house”. The cookoff raised a few thousand dollars for this fund. Brent reported to us that with these funds raised, this group could care for about 11 or 12 animals for at least 5 months.

It should be noted that Dave Sinclair is one of the most honorable chili cooks that we have in the Society. I have never seen Dave except his chili winnings from cookoffs in all the years I have been with him………He donates his winnings back to the charity of the cookoff. Dave donated his $750.00 of winnings to the Retired Race Horse Fund to help to care for these Horses. Brent, Ken and all the Thistledown group Thank You.

LONG ISLAND'S ROCKIN' CHILI COOKOFF - AUGUST 21, 2010
Long Island’s Rockin Chili Cook Off is now officially in the record books! The Black Rock Tavern in Yaphank, NY is a great venue and they really treated the cooks well! They had two great bands and the there was all kinds of food!
Wounded Warrior Project did quite well today and can really use the money to help our wounded hero’s.
TEXAS STATE - TASTE OF DOWNTOWN PLANO - SEPT. 11, 2010
For those who still need to qualify in red chili, come out to Plano, TX (Downtown at 15th street) on September 11. Entry fee is $40 for an ICS member. Prizes are as follows:

Due to health inspector requirements, all cooks will cook under one giant tent provided by the sponsors and there will be NO People’s Choice as the cooks cannot provide food to the public (only the judges). All cooks must set up before 11 am. Turn in is at 3 pm.

On a gorgeous last day of the 2010 Illinois State Fair, Chili cooks worked to the sounds of Elvis Himselvis and huge crowds. The Cookoff has become a fixture for the last day of the fair, helping to make the fair’s last day one of the large attendance days. We estimate there was 70,000-100,000 people attending the ARCA races, the Darius Rucker evening concert, the Abe’s Amble road race and of course the cookoff. All cooks should consider this cookoff next year. Results are:

This fun filled family event will also include self-guided tours of the Historical Fire Museum of Greater Cincinnati. Over three hundred thundering motorcycles will start the day with the annual 911 Memorial Poker Run. Local firefighters will be demonstrating life saving techniques, showing off their fire equipment as well as challenging each other in what is sure to be a wet and wild bucket brigade. The grill will be hot with some of Cincinnati’s favorite eats. Champion chili cooks from all over the United States and Canada will be competing for a chance to qualify and win 25 thousand dollars at the International Chili Society’s World Chili Championship! What a gorgeous day it was in Winchendon, MA. The humidity low, the sun shining, a little breeze and temps not much above 85! Perfect day for the families that came out to the Massachusetts State Chili Cookoff and the Kiwanis Family Fun Day. Great band, nice vendors, good food, hot chili and games for the kids. The chili cooks came out prepared to do battle. We had 36 red cooks going for that spot in the Worlds. A great big thanks to the Kiwanis who start their day at 5 am. Bruce Cloutier is always on the move making sure everyone has what they need to make this a success. All the volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the day.

Maureen and the Village of Willow Springs has really worked hard to make this a fun and exciting event for all. They have created several contest and events for the entire family from a Bean Bag Tournament and Bike decorating contest, to a Chili Pepper theme Cookie contest. All this and more! Andfor you Chiliheads, there will be Salsa, Verde and Red Chili. All of these qualify for the 2010 World’s Championship Oct. 2 & 3 in Manchester, NH.
Willow Springs will furnish tables and chairs to the chili contestants. You are asked to bring all your other equipment including covering. We will arrange for tents for “fly ins” if you give us notice.
The chili cooking season is getting shorter and if you need to get qualified, this would be a very good one to attend. You could also win $1,000 for your Red Chili win.

There will be a chili cooks party Friday evening at 6:30 pm at The Stag’s Head Inn, 8933 Archer Ave, Willow Springs, IL.
There seems to be something about the combination of a horserace and a chili cookoff that makes a recipe for success. This is certainly true of the 14th Annual Western Regional Chili Cookoff held at the Del Mar Race Track. In spite of the slight difficulty with loading out at the end of the day while the races are still going on, the cooks are always plentiful, as are the judges.
This particular date happened to be Zenyatta Day at Del Mar. For those (like me) who aren’t in the know about the ponies, Zenyatta is a female who is undefeated in 18 races, even beating up, as she did today, on some of the males. Because she was racing today in the seventh race, the attendance at the track was estimated at 10,000 more than on a normal raceday. Everyone in attendance, including chili cooks and judges received a set of glasses honoring Zenyatta. The cookoff Board of Directors always gives a nice gift to the preregistered red cooks; this year’s gift was a very nice and useful diffuser.
Along with the gifts for the chili cooks, the cookoff staff furnishes lunch for the judges. Red and Sachiko Brecke are in charge of planning and providing the meal. The usual chili cookoff lunch consists of sandwiches and chips with maybe a salad for variety. This year we knew we were in for a surprise when we arrived to see a couple of chafing dishes already set out on the serving table. As always Sachiko, with the help of her friend, Fujiko Poston, prepared platters of fresh sushi. Sachiko is a sushi master (mistress?) and we always look forward to the events where she does this. The surprise turned out to be an Okinawan dish that she called “taco rice”. It consisted of sticky rice, which was topped with well-seasoned ground beef, with traditional taco toppers to go over that. It was accompanied by various hot sauces and a bowl of fresh melons. After that, we’re all going to have to work harder at our chili cookoff lunches! Great job, Sachiko!
In the earlier days of this cookoff Fred Wieland was the Chief Judge. His daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Ralph Inman, always come to judge, and this year was no exception. Ramona reported that Leah is doing as well as can be expected, having spent a week staying with them before returning to her home to cope with her loss. A very nice memorial to Fred was posted at the front of the judging area. It was appreciated by all of us who miss him.
The race fans were out in great numbers to taste and appreciate the People’s Choice Chili. Claude Covington’s family is always in charge of this contest. They do an outstanding job of making tasting kits, selling them, then counting the votes. The crowd ebbs and flows, gathering around the booths to get their share of chili, then rushing off to the rail to watch as a race starts. Cooks and judges tried their luck at betting, probably with more failure than success. Some of their “systems” worked for a race or two, then broke down. Since nobody expected to score big at the betting, there were no disappointments, just a lot of fun.
ILLINOIS STATE FAIR REGIONAL CHILI COOKOFF - AUGUST 22, 2010
Illinois State Fair Cookoff - Springfield
It’s that time of year. The State Fair is starting this week and the annual chili cookoff is on the final day of the fair - Sunday August 22, 2010. Red, Verde and Salsa contests will be featured again this year. As usual, the cooks will be in the Miller Lite Beer Tent and entertainment will be provided all afternoon with Elvis Himselvis and the band Seeing Daylight - one of Illinois top bands. Tables will be provided for all cooks. This cookoff is always a great time and there is huge public presence. The fair offers many other entertainment options and, of course, there is lots and lots of “fair food”. If you want to enter you need to let us know so we can make sure you get a gate and parking pass.
There is less than 48 hours before the Chicago regionals begin. We still have space available, so sign up now! Saturday is the 16th annual Windy City Regional and Sunday is the Northern Illinois Regional. As it stands right now you will have a 1 in 6 chance of finishing in the money! For those not interested in anything but qualifying for the World’s Championship you will have two chances this weekend to pick up that much desired win.
